In the heart of Botswana, lies the captivating Makgadikgadi, the largest network of salt pans in the world. Burnished copper and gold grasslands, shimmering white expanses of salt and savannah are the essence of this part of the Kalahari Desert.
This is some of the best riding country in Africa! Space and more space leading to endless horizons full of wildlife.
Vast herds of zebra and wildebeest pass through the area followed by lion and cheetah, reaching their peak numbers in the early part of the year. Rare desert-adapted species such as the elusive brown hyena and aardwolf make regular appearances with the habituated meerkat colonies being a perennial highlight. Elephant are often encountered, and springbok and kudu are regular visitors.
The grasslands and salt-encrusted pans provide the perfect surface for riding with the freedom to keep on going and going and going…..when the migrating herds are in residence imagine cantering alongside more than a thousand zebra, or when the pan’s surface is dry heading out into the middle of nowhere, riding under the stars and sleeping under the moon with your horse tethered nearby. This has to be one of life’s greatest experiences.
In this extraordinary place there is riding for everyone. For the experienced rider our five night safaris are a must. For the less experienced we recommend daily camp based riding (from Jack’s, San or Camp Kalahari). We also offer a two hour morning or afternoon experience for those just wanting to get a feel of what it is like to ride in the wilds of Africa.
