Trans Okavango on Horseback

Kirsty Barclay

Supporting Rhino Conservation & Community Education

16-28 APRIL 2020

Join us on this unique opportunity to ride from west to east across the Okavango Delta on a 12-night fundraising safari with Ride Botswana.

The Okavango Delta is currently going through a dry cycle, hence a small window of opportunity to complete this journey on horseback – before the floods arrive, but whilst there is still groundwater after the rains.

The safari will run on the same basis as all our Okavango rides, with a lightweight camp being transported by a team of pack donkeys hired from the local community, which Ride Botswana supports.

The adventure will commence at the Sasanawenda Gate on the western edge of the Okavango, and (hopefully!) end on the eastern side, on the Gomoti River, a distance of approximately 150km. The distance between camping spots is limited by how far the donkeys can comfortably travel, so there will be ample time each day for us to explore.

All the horses and donkeys will be transported by truck from Maun to the start of the ride. Participants will be transported in a minibus.

Wildlife conservation and empowering local communities are fundamental to the company’s beliefs so funds raised will be split between:

  • The Wilderness Wildlife Trust (rhino conservation and a clean water project in Habu Village)
  • & Beyond (rhino conservation and a clean water project in Tshushubega Village)
  • Ride Botswana’s community educational programme. This community education programme involves sponsoring up to six students every year for a 12 month course in South Africa, either at the South African College of Tourism or the South African Trackers Academy. All students are selected from one of the six villages along the southern edge of the Okavango Delta.

Safari details:

  • The fully-inclusive cost of the 12-night safari is US$8390 per person.
  • A further US$5000 per person is required as the fundraising donation.
  • Only 8 riders, plus Ride Botswana staff; Ride Botswana will donate 7.5% of their safari fees to the fundraising initiative.
  • Riders must be in Maun by 15th April as there will be an early departure on 16th April for the start of the safari. Riders may depart on an international flight on 28th April or choose to stay in Maun or a Delta lodge (to clean up before the flight home and celebrate the completion of the journey!).
  • Riders must be willing to help groom and tack up their own horse, and assist with night watch duties if necessary.
  • The safari will be run as close as possible to our normal standards, but we will not be able to carry excessive quantities of alcohol (sorry!).
  • Please understand that this is a grand adventure and anything can happen!
